What do you get when you mix 31 participants from 11 chapters, add in 9 staff members, a cup or two of learning, lots of fun, and laughter to taste, and simmer for 40+ hours of togetherness? Fun, fun, fun and a LOT of new friends at the Horizons Program 2006! The weekend of March 10-12, 2006 at Monteagle, TN will long be remembered as a time to mix, mingle, make new friends, learn something new, and have a lot of fun. So what is it and why should you make plans to attend the next one?
"It's really difficult to explain how you can have so much fun while learning such a great deal about GWRRA. We all came home with new ideas of ways for our chapter to have even more fun and ways and means to inject fun in our meetings. I wish everyone in the chapter would attend one of these programs as soon as they could. This program is NOT just for officers, it's for all who have a desire to have fun and understand more about GWRRA."
Bill Smith, TN Chapter V, Chapter Director

Over and over people said, “I almost didn’t come because (fill in the blank), but I am SO glad I came and I have had SO much fun!” The Horizons Program is designed to create an atmosphere for fun, team building, fun, learning, and, yes, more fun. Years ago, the Horizons Program was a ‘by invitation only’ program, now the Horizons Program is for any member (new or old) who wishes to learn more or refresh him/herself in the areas of team building, communications, working with volunteers, and the whys and wherefores of GWRRA operations through fun, creative, presentations and activities. Trust me, it is not a ‘just sit and listen’ activity. Each participant is asked to do just that: participate! And if you do, you will have fun! And, by the way, who are those dummies?! Oops! I meant mummies?!

Our event was held atop Monteagle Mountain in southern Tennessee. We were blessed with great weather and a comfortable environment. The weekend started with a casual reception on Friday evening from 7pm-9pm which gave everyone a chance to say hello and get to know each other a little. On Saturday morning, the ‘real’ fun began. CJ Karcanes, International Director of Training, was the lead facilitator, assisted by Jeff Liner, TN District Director, and Ken Zahn, TN District Trainer. Miss Trivia 2006, Julie Zahn, kept everyone thinking with her endless lists of questions. Bob Renner, Region “N” Trainer, Bo Karcanes, Cherri Liner, and Mike and Mary Trice, TN District MED Coordinators, all provided tireless support and enthusiasm to the program.
It was the 31 participants though who made the program a unique, one-of-a-kind, truly memorable and enjoyable event. We took the gainfully employed, the self employed, and the retired, truck drivers, nurses, electricians, accountants, auditors, secretaries, homemakers, builders, and a variety of other professionals, long-time GWRRA members (lowest GWRRA member # was 34030) and relatively new GWRRA members (highest GWRRA member # was 236232), chapter officers, chapter members, men, and women and put them in one room, then we mixed them up, shook them up, and had a blast!
Our congratulations go to David & Judy Allen (TN-A2), Richard Bearden (TN-O), Bob & Shelly Britt (TN-Q), Dalon & Patricia Cope (TN-D), Roger & Marie Crowe (TN-V), Ed & Mary Ann Grazier (TN-Y), Bill & Jan Laird (TN-K), Aaron & Edna Lambert (TN-H), Mike Maynor (TN-L), Shirley McAmis (TN-O), David & Marie McGill (TN-V), Albert & Judy McKee (TN-D), James & Jerlene Smithson (TN-Z), Bill & Sonya Smith (TN-V), Jeff & Cathy Smith (TN-Q), Dudley & Ruthie Spakes (TN-U), and Larry & Sandra Stafford (TN-U) for successfully completing the Horizons Program 2006! Each participant received a certificate of completion, a Leadership Training Division head pin and a Horizons Program hanger bar. Please be sure to congratulate each of these wonderful people and thank them for taking the time to improve their leadership skills that we know will be well used as they carry out their chapter duties.
We hope YOU will plan on joining us at the Horizons Program 2007! Please check the TN website – Training page – (www.tngwrratraining.org) regularly for updated information and announcements about opportunities to participate in - each designed with YOU in mind.
